Meaning & Independence
What would make the way I spend an ordinary day feel worthwhile?
Updated November 1, 2026The morning I recorded my episode about life, God and money, I’d been writing in my journal and my girls were ready to go skiing. I could have spent the whole day trying to explain what makes life meaningful. I also knew exactly who I wanted to spend that day with.
I think independence matters because it gives me room to act on an answer like that. I want to choose the work I give myself to, be present with Megan and our girls, and meet a disagreement with a little more love than I managed the last time. My calendar usually tells me something about how I’m doing.
Books from my library
- Conversations with God, Book 1 · Neale Donald Walsch ↗
Walsch gave me language for something I recognize in myself. I can feel a conversation change when I stop defending myself and get curious about what the other person loves or fears.
- Man’s Search for Meaning · Viktor E. Frankl ↗
Frankl writes about finding purpose under circumstances he could not choose. The question it raises for me is what I do with the choices I already have.
Other podcasts and interviews
- Andrew Huberman with Jordan B. Peterson · Neuroscience Meets Psychology ↗
They discuss goals, motivation and the effort a person is willing to make toward something they value. Listen for the connection between a distant aim and what someone does today.
From my podcast
- 449 · Understanding the Meaning of Life, God, and Money ↗
My solo recording from that morning. I read from my journal and try to put words to what I believe about love, fear and the value of my time.
- 517 · Self-awareness and leadership, with Rich Hoffmann ↗
Rich and I talk about thinking out loud and how that feels to the person across the table. It’s a practical test of the way I say I want to treat people.
