Definition
The Velocity Score™ is the total of your 27 milestone scores in the iBD Ownership OS™, from 0 to 81. It summarizes progress installing the capabilities assessed on your Owner’s Roadmap.
How the total works
Each milestone is scored 0 Not Started, 1 Learning, 2 In Progress or 3 Installed, using its own requirements and evidence. Three milestone scores make a module total out of 9. Three module totals make a phase total out of 27. All nine modules make the total out of 81.
For example, milestone scores of 3, 2 and 1 give that module a score of 6 out of 9. If the second milestone later meets its complete installation requirements, it can move from 2 to 3. The module and overall totals each rise by one point.
Why It Matters
The total provides a consistent way to track progress over time. The individual milestone scores explain what changed and what remains unfinished. Two owners with the same total can have very different capabilities and priorities.
A radar chart can display the nine module totals. It is one way to show the score; the chart’s shape does not by itself establish the business’s most important constraint.
What the score does not establish
A higher score does not automatically calculate a higher valuation multiple, a lower company risk premium or more independence. Those conclusions need their own financial and operating evidence. Choose priorities in light of ownership goals and dependencies, rather than working only to increase the total.
The Alignment Score measures something different: your clarity about the path to Time, Cash Flow and Wealth goals, with three ratings from 1 to 7 and a total out of 21. Keep the two scores distinct.
A future score on the North Star is a planning target, separate from today’s assessed score.
