The One Thing is the priority you choose to advance your ownership goals over the next 90 days. It focuses attention on the constraint or missing capability that most needs work now, and becomes the central commitment in your 90-Day Game Plan.

Why This Matters for Owners

Choosing one priority makes a trade-off explicit: this work receives protected time, people and money, while other improvements may wait. The business still needs to serve customers, manage cash and meet its obligations. A quarterly focus does not suspend those responsibilities.

How It Works

Start with your annual North Star and the evidence on your Roadmap. Ask what is limiting the ownership result, what other work depends on it, who can carry it, and what happens if you wait. The lowest score is a clue, not an automatic selection rule.

For example, reliable financial reporting may need to come before a lasting incentive plan. You can make reporting the quarter’s priority while addressing an urgent retention concern with a limited, supported commitment. State what you are doing now, what remains open and when you will reconsider it.

Translate the chosen priority into a result at day 90 and three observable outcomes, each with a responsible person, due date and completion evidence. The relevant milestone’s requirements still govern its score. One quarter may establish only part of a capability that needs repeated use over time.

The Quarterly Boardroom reviews the evidence and adopts the next plan. The same priority can continue into another quarter when the reasoning and next outcomes are clear.
