A valuation multiple expresses business or equity value as a number of times a defined financial measure. An enterprise-value-to-EBITDA multiple compares the value of operations with the specified EBITDA for the matching period. WACC is a related required-return assumption, not the multiple itself.

“Five times” needs a basis

For a hypothetical business, $1 million supported Normalized EBITDA at a 5× enterprise-value multiple implies $5 million enterprise value. It does not imply $5 million in your bank account. Debt, eligible cash, other claims, ownership rights and sale terms still matter.

A revenue multiple, EBITDA multiple and equity-price-to-earnings multiple are different comparisons. State the numerator, earnings or revenue basis, historical or forecast period and valuation date. A comparable transaction is only useful when its basis and circumstances are understood.

Why the required return matters

WACC blends the required return on debt and equity. Holding the projected cash flows constant, a higher discount rate reduces their present value. That connection helps explain why more uncertain businesses can be valued differently.

An EBITDA multiple also depends on taxes, reinvestment, growth and how much earnings becomes cash. The NYU Stern treatment of value multiples shows those separate drivers. Market and transaction evidence still need to support the multiple used.

The limit of one divided by the rate

For a level annual cash flow received forever, with no growth and the first payment one year from now, value equals cash flow divided by the applicable required return. In that narrow illustration, a 20% rate produces a 5× cash-flow multiple.

EBITDA is not that perpetual cash flow. A reciprocal example illustrates the relationship between return and value under those assumptions. It does not establish a universal conversion from WACC to an EBITDA multiple.

Use the Roadmap to identify capabilities worth improving. Use separate financial evidence to judge their impact on cash and value. A higher Velocity Score™ does not automatically earn a particular multiple.
